The first everlasting shade photograph was taken in 1861 using the three-color-separation precept first published by Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1855. The basis of virtually all practical colour processes, Maxwell’s idea was to take three separate black-and-white photographs via purple, green and blue filters. This supplies the photographer with the three primary channels required to recreate a color picture. Transparent prints of the images could probably be projected through comparable colour filters and superimposed on the projection display, an additive methodology of color copy.

Miriam Y. Katz has been the collection supervisor for the Department of Photographs since 2011. She has an MA in museum research and collections administration from George Washington University and a BA in artwork history from Wellesley College.
