The purpose of contemporary museums is to gather, preserve, interpret, and display objects of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the study and schooling of the public. From a customer or community perspective, this purpose also can depend upon one’s point of view.
Some museums grapple with this problem by displaying completely different eras in the residence’s historical past within different rooms or sections of the structure. The National Building Museum in Washington D.C., a privately run institution created by a mandate of Congress in 1980, is the nation’s most outstanding public museum of structure. The NBM is a unique museum in that the constructing by which it’s housed—the historic Pension Building built 1882–87—is itself a sort of curated assortment piece which teaches about architecture. Another massive scale museum of architecture is the Chicago Athenaeum, a global Museum of Architecture and Design, founded in 1988.
